Practical Things to Affirm Your Spiritual Identity
- Post scriptures all around the house on the door, kids’ rooms, kitchens, even the bathroom. You may purchase some at a Christian bookstore or make your own. Computer graphic programs make them more eye-appealing.
- Play praise and worship music that invites the presence of God in your home.
- Make a family flag which establishes your family spiritual identity. Our family flag has five stars (more to be added as the family grows) encased in a heart symbolizing heavenly identification.
- Designate a Christian song ( with enduring meaning ) as your family song. If you are musical, write your own family song.
- Designate a special song to each child in your family, as each is affirmed in their calling within the family.
- Make spiritual growth boxes with your kids. Put in a Bible, devotional books, and Kids Concordance.
- Establish a family quiet time. Give kids a spiritual journal. Encourage kids to write letters to God, and invest in them by getting devotionals and spiritual growth books.
- Chart and acknowledge your child’s spiritual growth just as you would their natural growth. For instance, when your child spends more time in prayer, etc., encourage and affirm it.
- Establish household rules that affect the atmosphere as well as environment. Your children will see you put a high value on the spiritual, not just the natural.
- Make a book of spiritual markings for the family, such as baptism, your church doctrinal events, etc.
- Memorize scripture together as a family. Discuss the scripture.
- Read through the book of Proverbs together. Discuss it with your children. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs. Since they are generally 31 days in the month you, may read one chapter a day for a month to complete the entire book of Proverbs.
- Each member read through the Bible and try to pick out interesting Bible facts for the other family members to find.
- Designate a quiet room/ prayer room in your home. If you do not have the space, designate a quiet hour during the day.
- Set spiritual goals individually and corporately as a family.
- Take family prayer walks in your community. Pray for your neighbors and the community.
- Discuss Sunday school or Sunday morning messages and how you will change as a result of hearing and heeding the message.
